Two Mamas Sourdough Breadmaking Class

18/09/2013 by Emma 1 Comment

Learning to make sourdough in Glasgow

Paola and Cristina, the two mamas, started their website a couple of years ago as a resource for their recipes (I'm betting this collection is HUGE!)

We visited their class to witness and learn about their love of good, homemade food.

Due to the untimely demise of Grassroots Deli, we had a change of set up meeting in one of the rooms at Strathclyde University.

The room was well laid out with the equipment already in place. The ladies handled the change in venue well, not knowing how hot the ovens were when you are not used to them is a challenge I know too well!Two_mamas_jar

We were each given a jar of Sourdough starter to take home with us. This would be our starter and we learned how to nurture it to make good bread.

Flour as well was provided, along with other ingredients for preparing your bread to bake at home.

We were taught how to knead, roll and prepare our breads for baking, once they have proven at home. The smell coming from the oven throughout the class was delicious. I'm sure it inspired us all.

If only the internet had smelly-vision, the smell from this oven was devine.

The finished bread, straight out of the oven. Not the best practice we were advised but we were all ravenous with the smell and wanted to taste it.

Perfectly fluffy sourdough.

At the end of the class, we sat back with some treats supplied by the mamas, tea/coffee and some chat.

We thoroughly enjoyed this class. Learning to make sourdough from scratch with natural yeast was something that I would never have had the confidence to try on my own. With helpful eyes and expert kneading!), we were shown along the way. With a small enough number of people to have a chat with and not feel that you are being ignored this was as near to a one-to-one class you can probably get.

The perfect topping to the class was the time for a chat and to sample some excellent food at the end of the class.

Thank you to Paola and Cristina for such a great day, and please find further information about their breadmaking classes on their blog.
