A cosy North London pub with a proper local feel

The Westbury manages to balance the feel of a modern gastropub with the comfort of a traditional local. Inside, there’s plenty of seating, and filled up quickly once we arrived.  There’s also a spacious outdoor terrace which looks like it becomes a suntrap on warmer days.

Emma opted for the garlic and rosemary half chicken which arrived tender and packed with flavour. The Yorkshire pudding was gloriously oversized, crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Roast potatoes were properly crunchy, soaking up the rich gravy perfectly.

Mark picked the trio of meat which had pork, beef and lamb, all deliciously cooked. As well as the usual trimmings, this dish had the extra of some pork crackling.

Vegetables were cooked well and served generously, while the gravy tied everything together with deep, savoury flavour. Portions are substantial, so come hungry.  Being the gannets we are, we ordered a side of cauliflower cheese, as it would have seemed rude not to.  Cheesy and the veg still had some bite –  none of that mushy stuff here.  It did look overcooked, but it wasn’t.

If meat isn’t your thing, there are veggie Wellington and vegan nut roast.

Beer selection and atmosphere

One thing that elevates The Westbury above many London pubs is the drinks selection. There’s a strong line-up of craft beers, ales and rotating taps, making this an excellent place to settle in for a long Sunday session after lunch.

The atmosphere strikes that ideal balance between lively and relaxed. Families, groups of friends, couples and dogs all seem equally welcome here, adding to the warm neighbourhood feel.

Service

Even when busy, service remained friendly and efficient. Staff were attentive without hovering and happy to offer recommendations.
