About The Bonham

The Bonham is a 4 star boutique hotel situated in the West End of Edinburgh within walking distance of Haymarket Railway Station as well as main thoroughfares such as George Street and Princes Street.

The quiet and relaxing Drumsheugh Gardens are located across from The Bonham, we made use of this later. The hotel, and area, has a very relaxing ambiance. History surrounds but with some lush decor, the smell of good food and hubbub of chat.

The Event

We were treated to a very much different Bonham Bubbles than usual due to the attendance of Piper Heidsieck themselves. After a brief outline of the history of the champagne, we went outside to the gardens to try some sabrage.

This is when a sabre (or even a glass!) can be used to open a bottle of champagne. It was definitely something different!

Helen, from Piper Heidsieck, explained how to handle the bottle, and sabre! With the aplomb of a professional, the top whizzed off with a cheer. This would be a great activity for a birthday, graduation, party or in fact any gathering as it was such fun.

We all had a bash, some taking a bit of time (Mrs Foodie!) others first time success. With corks and glass flying there was much laughter, a great success to break the ice in the group.

After such a strenuous activity, it was time for lunch.

A note of the menu:

First

Soup – Carrot & star anise soup, ricotta & coriander gnocchi

Goats Cheese – Goat cheese parfait, heritage tomatoes salad

Parfait – Chicken liver parfait, pickled cherries and gingerbread

Monkfish – Monkfish cheeks, brandade mousse, chorizo, gremolata

Seconds

Risotto – New season asparagus and Parmesan risotto

Sea Trout – Loch Etive sea trout, organic beetroot salad, dill & cucumber velouté

Lamb – Slow cooked lamb shoulder, roast garlic mash, tomato chutney, anchovy & olive jus

Chicken – Free range chicken breast, summer truffles, wild asparagus, girolles mushrooms

Sweets

Strawberry & Passion Fruit – Strawberry & passion fruit soup with lemon sorbet

Cranachan – Whiskey parfait, honey & whiskey syrup, raspberries, oat raspberry granola

Chocolate – Praline chocolate brownie, vanilla ice cream

Cheese – Duo of cheeses, chutney, grapes & biscuits

What a choice, I admit I struggled with a few – might have to go back to try others.

Light and moist tasting Monkfish, not as meaty as the normal steaks. The chorizo went really well with this. The panko style breadcrumbs worked well.

Crisp trout skin added some tang to the light trout with the cucumber and dill adding a summery taste,

Very different from the usual gloopy, sundae dish style. The oat granola was especially tasty.

Conclusion

At £50 per person for three courses as well as the unlimited Piper Heidsieck over the course of the meal, this is excellent value and something that would be much appreciated for a birthday, special occasion or celebration.

Many thanks to The Bonham and Piper Heidsieck for inviting us along.
