Background to the Old Fashioned Cocktail

The favourite cocktail of Don Draper in Mad Men, the old fashioned is a cocktail made with whiskey (with an e as it is a drink of American origin), sometimes brandy, sugar and bitters.

The Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky, claims the old-fashioned cocktail was invented there.
