glen moray tasting amontillado finish

Three Whiskies from Glen Moray for Christmas

Last week we took part in a zoom tasting of Glen Moray’s three new treasures from its award-winning Warehouse 1 Collection.  This trio is comprised of Amarone Finish; Amontillado Finish; and Oloroso Fully Matured, which has spent eight years in Oloroso casks.

This three limited-edition, UK exclusives have been bottled and released just in time for Christmas, making them the perfect gift for whisky lovers, old and new, who would love to unwrap a special dram to enjoy over the festive season.

Glen Moray Warehouse 1 Amarone Finish

Finished in casks that once held Italian Amarone red wine, offering rich, ripe fruity notes.

Distillation 12.02.2010
Only 1194 bottles are available.
55.4% ABV
RRP £79.95 Available from Master of Malt.

Tasting notes

Sweet and spicy fig and cinnamon on the nose, followed by rich chocolate cherry liqueur. Flavours of  brown sugar, chocolate, cherry, and even fresh green peppercorn.

What we thought

Aroma of figs or prunes in syrup and chocolate. Needs a few drops of water but definitely pleasant for the high percentage.

Glen Moray Warehouse 1 Amontillado Finish

Finished in casks that once held this dark sherry from the Montilla region of Spain, giving the finished whisky deep, rich sherry notes.

Distillation 12.08.2013
Only 1248 bottles are available.
57.5% ABV
RRP £74.95 Available from Master of Malt

Tasting notes

Caramel and chocolate on the nose, followed by  earthy tobacco and leather. Chocolate and hazelnut on the palate with a buttery chocolate finish.

What we thought

Big on orange peel and marmalade aromas, sweet toffee flavour with an oily mouthfeel, would be ideal for an Old Fashioned. Again, found it best with a few drops of water but then it is 57.5%!

Glen Moray Warehouse 1 Oloroso Fully Matured

Dark, nutty Oloroso (“scented” in Spanish) plays an important part in finishing Glen Moray’s core range, but this is the distillery’s first expression to be fully matured in Oloroso casks.

Distillation: 06.06.2014
Only 1950 bottles are available
60% ABV
RRP £76.95 Available from Master of Malt.

Tasting notes

Malty rich cacao, hedgerow fruits, and a little bit of toasted chestnuts on the nose. On the palate, sweet liquorice, nuts and dried fruit.

What we thought

The nuttiest of the three with aromas of toffee apples and coffee creams. It also has a creamy and oily mouthfeel. At 60% it definitely needs a little water to tame the alcohol and bring out the full flavour profile.
