Dining at Görlitzer Kartoffelhaus, Görlitz

Filling and tasty food in the heart of Görlitz

With potato beer on the menu, Mark booked a visit to Gölitzer Kartoffelhaus. We had previously tried to visit another Kartofellhaus, but it was full, so he made sure to book a table this time. We were the first ones in, and it filled up quickly, so we would recommend booking if you want a table.

Inside is rustic and full of charm, with the weather being above freezing, the Scottish genes kicked in and we decided to sit outside with the fear that losing a day of sunshine would annoy the nature gods.

When going to the toilet you will see an array of German potato-related posters, I never knew there were so many types of potato!

Menu

Here is a look at the food and drinks menu, plus the seasonal asparagus menu. A wide range of dishes on offer, not just potatoes 20 ways.

Of course, we had to order the kartoffelbier, potato beer, a refreshing and easy-to-drink beer.

I ordered the Silesian Heaven, which is smoked and sliced pork served in a sweet fruity sauce with poached fruits and potato dumplings. This went perfectly with the beer. A hearty dish that ensured that I was well-fed for our ongoing journey to Bautzen. Fluffy potato dumplings, smokey and delicate pork with plump fruits.

Mark ordered the Fire meat which had a warning chilli. Sliced pork, mushrooms, onions and peppers served with some sliced and sauteed potatoes. Disappointingly not spicy, more of a paprika warmth. Another filling dish.

It would have been rude not to try the potato schnapps, so we did. A warming brew, not quite a full judder of ooof from the alcohol, but a pleasant warmth.

Verdict

If you are looking for somewhere with relaxed and friendly service that also serves tasty and filling food, then Görlitz Kartofellhaus is the place to visit.  Good, hearty food, and of course, the potatoes were worth the visit.
