Pizza Pilgrims have recently opened their first Scottish site at Rose Street in Edinburgh, its at the St Andrews Square end.

There are two floors of dining spaces, with the upstairs also hosting  ‘Dough It Yourself’ Pizza Masterclasses, where guests can learn to craft their own pizzas from scratch.

Look out for the many Napoli inspired decorations, like the hanging washing.

We were seated by what we can only describe as a “sour face”, didn’t seem too happy to be working.  We had a voucher for 50% off the pizza, could we use it? “I’ll need to find out”  So we placed our order without it being cleared up.

What we ate and drank

An Amalfi lemonade and Italian cherry soda to start.  Not as strong as we had hoped, and a lot of ice.

The Americana Pizza – a mozzarella base with hot dog sausage and French fries.  A favourite of ours in Naples, here is one we ate at Pizzeria Gorizia.

naples sausage and chips pizza More smoked sausage style sausage than the smaller hot dog sausage we had in Naples.  Lots of creamy mozzarella and some good leoparding to the pizza crust.  However, the dough was a little bit doughy in parts and not as fluffy inside as expected.  A superb crust though.

Fritto misto with smoked mozzarella bites, cacio e pepe balls and artichoke bites served with dips.  Guess the dip, as we weren’t told!  The mozzarella bites were gooey and smokey and the cacio e pepe balls perfect. The artichoke could have been lighter, was a little bit greasy.

We had to ask again if the voucher would be accepted.  After disappearing, they returned with the bill, service charge automatically added.   We asked for this to be taken off as a – we don’t like it automatically added and b – the service from happy chops wasn’t the best.

Verdict

Meh.

The mozzarella bites and cacio e pepe were tasty, something to order again. The pizza wasn’t quite like we had experienced in Naples, and we’ve had better pizza elsewhere.

Service could be better, especially if the charge is automatically added.

A smile or two wouldn’t go amiss from some staff members.  Less time chatting with each other and more serving.
