Tasting the new release from Glen Moray 12 Year Old Smoky the first fully peated whisky in their core range

If you have been following our explorations, you may know that we like Glen Moray whisky, so much so we visited the distillery in Elgin.  If you don’t know about Glen Moray, their distillery is located in Elgin in the heart of Speyside which is known for it’s smooth whisky style. It’s a single malt distillery beside the River Lossie which has been making whisky for over 150 years.   They produce mostly unpeated whisky

It is non chill-filtered and natural colour which is a beautiful golden.

On the nose, I get a light smoke, not too much a bit like the smell off of clothes after sitting near a bonfire.  Alongside this is that classic vanilla and sightly spiced orchard fruit aroma from Glen Moray.

The palate is very similar to the nose, continuing that light smoky journey.  This is a lighter peated whisky, nothing like an Islay one, less medicinal and more smoke.  Add to this hints of oak and some caramelised fruits and you get a peated whisky which is stronger than the Glen Moray Peated but not overwhelming with only 20 parts per million here.

I get a long fruity finish from this Glen Moray 12 year old smoky, with that sitting next to a bonfire feeling lingering on as well.

Glen Moray Smoky 12 Years Old is bottled in 70cl, RRP £49.99. It is available from https://www.masterofmalt.com/ and select specialist whisky retailers.
