Emma Mykytyn Whirlybird Edinburgh Swoops into Michelin Guide Just Four Months After Opening
Edinburgh restaurant Whirlybird has been added to the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland only four months after opening its doors.
The café, bar and restaurant opened on Victoria Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town in May 2026. It is one of 22 restaurants across the UK and Ireland included in Michelin’s September update and one of only two new Scottish additions.
Michelin recognition for Whirlybird Edinburgh
Set inside a characterful building more than 250 years old, Whirlybird stretches across two floors overlooking one of Edinburgh’s most colourful and photographed streets.
Michelin’s inspectors highlighted its relaxed all-day offering, which moves from morning coffee and light lunches to cocktails, dinner and drinks in the adjoining bar.
However, it was the bistro-style cooking that really caught their attention. Whirlybird was praised for allowing quality ingredients to shine without piling on unnecessary fuss. The restaurant is now listed under Michelin’s Modern Cuisine category.
It is worth noting that inclusion in the Michelin Guide does not mean that Whirlybird has received a Michelin Star or Bib Gourmand at least, not yet. Any further awards will be announced when the 2027 Michelin Guide is announced.
When we visited Whirlybird, we tucked into haggis with ox cheek, smoked mackerel salad, a Highland Wagyu burger and pan-fried hake with champagne velouté. There was also grilled aubergine with cashew cream and rose harissa, followed by Milk and Honey ice cream.
Our standout dish was the beautifully cooked hake, although the peppery haggis and meltingly tender ox cheek came very close.

A rapid rise for an Edinburgh newcomer
Earning a place in the Michelin Guide so soon after opening is an impressive achievement and another reason to keep an eye on this Victoria Street newcomer.
Whirlybird manages to feel stylish without becoming stiff, serving thoughtful food in a relaxed setting. Its central Old Town location also makes it handy for lunch between sightseeing stops, dinner before a show or cocktails after exploring Edinburgh.
With Michelin’s inspectors already paying attention, this little Whirlybird appears to be flying high.
