Review of Restaurant Berlinchen, Berlin
If you’re searching for authentic Berlin cuisine rather than another tourist-focused beer hall, Restaurant Berlinchen is one of the city’s best traditional dining experiences. Located just a short walk from Wittenbergplatz and the Berlin Zoological Garden, this long-established restaurant specialises in classic Berlin and German comfort food served in a warm, old-fashioned setting. Another couple of bars we have enjoyed eating in are Metzer Eck and Dicke Wirtin.

The atmosphere immediately feels welcoming, with dark wood furnishings, traditional décor and the cosy charm of a neighbourhood restaurant rather than a modern dining hotspot. It’s the sort of place where locals and visitors sit side by side enjoying hearty meals and a freshly poured Berlin beer.

The menu at Restaurant Berlinchen Berlin
The menu focuses on traditional recipes prepared with quality ingredients. Expect Berlin favourites including:
Currywurst, Wiener Schnitzel, Königsberger Klopse (veal meatballs in caper sauce) and
Eisbein (pork knuckle)

Drinks
Berlinchen offers a good range of German beers on draught alongside regional wines that pair well with the rich cuisine. A cold local lager is the perfect companion to schnitzel or currywurst or try a Mampe halb & halb. – which is like a half herb and half bitter orange drink. Very refreshing.

Service
Service is friendly and efficient, with English spoken by the staff, making it an easy choice for international visitors.
Our waiter had an iPad to show images of the dishes, which helped explain daily specials and help guests unfamiliar with traditional German dishes.

Atmosphere
One of Berlinchen’s greatest strengths is its atmosphere. Rather than feeling commercial, it retains the character of an old Berlin restaurant where meals are leisurely and comforting. It’s particularly popular in the evenings, so reservations are recommended.

What we ate and drank at inside Restaurant Berlinchen Berlin
Berlin Boulette with potato salad. A hefty Berlin style meatball with gravy, mustard and a tasty potato salad. A good chonk of moist meat.

Roasted pork knuckle with mashed potato and sauerkraut. Another hefty portion here of moist pork with crackling and buttery smooth mashed potato.

Herring fillet with boiled potatoes and salad. Soused herring in a creamy apple and onion sauce. Soft and mild herring in a sour cream and yoghurt sauce. Delicious served with perfectly cooked potatoes.

Three happy bellies!
