Pub: The Holy GrALE, Durham

Now I’ve seen the light and found the Holy GrAle

The Holy GrALE of ale indeed.  When in Durham for the Lumiere Festival, we found an advert for The Holy GrALE pub in a local beer guide, so off we went to find it.  It wasn’t too hard to locate, on the West side of the River Wear in the city centre.  It’s up a steep hill but worth it.

Inside there’s an open plan bar with a relaxed and quirky vibe.  We especially liked the decorative heads.

There’s also a bottle shop at the rear of the bar with a wide selection of bottles and cans to take home.

Menu

As expected, Durham Brewery features prominently on the beer menu.

It would have been rude not to try the Durham Brewery Lumiere, made for the light festival and the sole reason that we were in Durham! This was an enjoyable IPA.  Then we moved onto their richer, heavier Temptation Imperial Stout and the more exotic Tonkoatko, from Brew York, an oatmeal stout with cacao, coconut, vanilla and tonic bean flavour. they also had one of my favourite beers on cask – Titanic plum porter.

Even Velma joined in.

Verdict

👍

Well worth seeking out for an excellent selection of beers from the local area and further afield.
