Mercadona Coconut Coffee: How to Make the Viral Coco Affogato
Coffee and ice cream are always a good combination, but this viral Mercadona coconut coffee takes the classic affogato in a deliciously tropical direction.
The easy two-ingredient dessert has been popping up on TikTok and Instagram, where people are pouring hot espresso directly into one of Mercadona’s frozen coconut halves. The result is a creamy coconut coffee that sits somewhere between an affogato, an iced coffee and a luxurious dessert.
Best of all, you can make it in minutes.

What is the viral Mercadona coconut coffee?
Often called a coconut affogato, coco coffee or Mercadona Cocos Coffee, the recipe uses the supermarket’s Hacendado Medios Cocos Helados.
Each dessert consists of coconut ice cream served inside half a coconut shell. To make the viral coffee, a small hollow is created in the centre of the ice cream before a freshly brewed espresso is poured into it.
The hot coffee slowly melts the cold coconut ice cream, creating a thick, sweet and creamy drink that can be sipped or eaten with a spoon.

It is based on the traditional Italian affogato, which normally consists of vanilla gelato “drowned” in hot espresso. This Spanish supermarket version replaces vanilla with coconut and comes with its own photogenic serving bowl.
Where can you buy the Mercadona coconut ice cream?
Look for Medios Cocos Helados Hacendado in the frozen dessert section of Mercadona stores in Spain.
The box contains two frozen coconut halves with a combined volume of 350ml. The product was priced at approximately €2.70 per box in August 2026, although prices and availability can vary between stores. Mercadona also currently lists the [Hacendado frozen coconut halves online](https://tienda.mercadona.es/product/64166/medios-cocos-helados-hacendado-caja).
That makes each coconut affogato around €1.35 before adding the coffee.

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Serves: One
Difficulty: Very easy
Ingredients
One Mercadona Hacendado frozen coconut half
One freshly prepared espresso, around 25–30ml
Method
Remove one frozen coconut half from its packaging.
Leave the ice cream at room temperature for three to five minutes to soften slightly.
Use a teaspoon to make a small hollow in the middle of the coconut ice cream. You can eat the spoonful you remove—we won’t tell anyone.
Prepare a short, strong espresso.
Slowly pour the hot coffee into the hollow.
Wait for around 20 seconds while the coffee begins to melt the ice cream.
Stir gently and enjoy immediately with a teaspoon.
Do not add too much coffee at once. A short espresso gives you the creamy texture seen in the viral videos without causing the coconut shell to overflow.

What does coconut affogato taste like?
The appeal comes from the contrast between the hot, slightly bitter espresso and the cold, sweet coconut ice cream.
As the ice cream melts, it softens the intensity of the coffee and creates an almost milkshake-like texture. You still get the roasted flavour of the espresso, followed by a creamy tropical sweetness.
Anyone who enjoys coconut lattes, iced coffee or a traditional Italian affogato is likely to appreciate the combination.
Easy coconut coffee variations
The original version needs only coconut ice cream and espresso, but there are several ways to adapt it.
Add cinnamon
Dust a little ground cinnamon over the top for warmth and a gentle spiced flavour.
Add chocolate
Sprinkle over grated dark chocolate or cocoa powder. Coconut, coffee and dark chocolate work particularly well together.
Make it less sweet
Use a strong, unsweetened espresso or add a second small shot after eating some of the ice cream.
Make it boozy
Add a small splash of dark rum, coffee liqueur or coconut rum for an adults-only dessert.
Use decaffeinated coffee
A decaf espresso makes this an easy after-dinner dessert without the late-night caffeine.
Add toasted coconut
Finish with toasted coconut flakes for extra flavour and a little crunch.
Is the Mercadona coconut coffee vegan?
No. Despite its coconut flavour, the Hacendado frozen coconut dessert contains milk-based ingredients, including reconstituted skimmed milk and butter, alongside desiccated coconut and coconut milk powder.
Anyone with an allergy or dietary requirement should always check the current packaging before eating it, as ingredients can change.
