Breakfast in Frigiliana: La Bocatería de Nuria Review – English Breakfast, Camperos and Café Bombón

If you are searching for where to eat breakfast in Frigiliana, particularly somewhere relaxed, unfussy and with a menu that covers both Spanish favourites and familiar British breakfast dishes, La Bocatería de Nuria is worth knowing about.

Breakfast in Frigiliana: La Bocatería de Nuria Review

This small Frigiliana café and sandwich shop has a wonderfully informal feel, complete with a handwritten bilingual menu packed with bocadillos, camperos, omelettes and breakfast dishes. Frigiliana’s official tourism information also lists La Bocatería de Nuria as one of the businesses in the village.

We stopped by for breakfast and tried a good cross-section of the menu: an English breakfast, a ham and cheese croissant and a Lomo de Leña campero, alongside a café bombón, black coffee and English tea.

One of the things we liked immediately about La Bocatería de Nuria was that there’s no elaborate menu presentation here. Instead, the dishes are written out by hand in Spanish and English, making it particularly easy for visitors to work out exactly what they are ordering.

The menu stretches far beyond breakfast too, with bocadillos, round-bread campero sandwiches, tortillas and various hot and cold fillings. It’s the sort of place where you can linger over a coffee, grab something relatively quick before exploring Frigiliana or settle down for a substantial breakfast before tackling the village’s famously hilly streets.

Sometimes, especially after several days of travelling, only a proper cooked breakfast will do, and seeing an English breakfast listed on the menu, Mark had to order it.  I think he was weaning himself gently into Spain!

It was filling, uncomplicated and ideal if you are looking for a British-style breakfast in Frigiliana rather than another pastry or piece of toast.

One advantage of La Bocatería de Nuria is that groups don’t have to agree on what kind of breakfast they fancy. Someone can opt for an English-style cooked breakfast while everyone else works their way through the more Spanish side of the menu.

For travellers searching online for where to get an English breakfast in Frigiliana, this is certainly one option to have on your radar.

ham and cheese croissant Breakfast in Frigiliana: La Bocatería de Nuria Review

Our ham and cheese croissant was the simpler choice, but sometimes simple is exactly what you want at breakfast. Salty ham, melted cheese and a croissant make a hard combination to dislike. It’s also a handy option if you’re looking for a quick breakfast in Frigiliana before heading off sightseeing rather than sitting down to a large cooked meal.

Pair it with coffee, and you’ve got an easy breakfast that doesn’t leave you feeling as though you need to return to bed afterwards.

The dish that caught our attention most was the Lomo de Leña campero.

If you see the camperos section of the menu, don’t overlook it.

Our choice came with pork, peppers, cheese and tomato, packed into the round bread used for the sandwich. The result is something considerably more substantial than your average breakfast sandwich. Pork and cheese bring the richness, while the pepper and tomato stop everything becoming too heavy.

For visitors who would rather try something more Spanish than an English breakfast, the Lomo de Leña campero at La Bocatería de Nuria is an excellent alternative. It’s also the sort of dish that works equally well if your “breakfast” has somehow drifted towards lunchtime – something that seems remarkably easy to do on holiday in Andalucía.

What is a Campero? Anyone visiting the Málaga area is likely to encounter a campero sooner or later.

Rather than a long baguette-style bocadillo, camperos are made using round bread and filled with combinations of meat, cheese, salad, sauces and other ingredients.

At La Bocatería de Nuria there are several versions on the handwritten menu, including combinations involving chicken, pork loin, tuna and salmon.

Breakfast also gave us an excuse for a café bombón. This is definitely coffee for people with a sweet tooth, so Emma ordered one of these!

The combination of strong coffee and condensed milk gives café bombón its characteristic sweetness and creamy texture. It feels somewhere between morning coffee and a small dessert, which we have absolutely no problem with.

If you’ve been ordering café con leche throughout your holiday and fancy changing things up, try a café bombón.

We balanced the café bombón with a straightforward black coffee, while our other drink was an English tea.  Tea drinkers will therefore be relieved to know they don’t necessarily have to abandon their morning cuppa while looking for breakfast in Frigiliana. With coffee, tea, sweet coffee and plenty of food choices, this is an easy place for a mixed group of breakfast preferences.

Is La Bocatería de Nuria Good for Breakfast in Frigiliana?

We enjoyed our breakfast here. La Bocatería de Nuria isn’t trying to turn breakfast into an event. Instead, it offers filling, straightforward food with plenty of choice and an appealing mixture of Spanish and more familiar dishes. Our favourite reason to visit is probably the variety. Fancy a full English? You can have one. Just want a ham and cheese croissant? Sorted.

Want something more local and substantially more filling? Head towards the campero section. And if your morning caffeine needs something sweeter than usual, order the café bombón.

Foodie Explorers Verdict

For anyone wondering where to have breakfast in Frigiliana, La Bocatería de Nuria offers something a little different from the cafés concentrated around the most touristy parts of the village.

We liked the casual atmosphere, broad choice and no-nonsense approach to breakfast, it was our favourite breakfast spot in the town.

The Lomo de Leña campero is the one we’d particularly suggest trying if you fancy something substantial, while the café bombón provides a suitably sweet caffeine boost.

Add the fact that you can also order an English breakfast, croissants, tea and plenty of bocadillos, and La Bocatería de Nuria is an easy breakfast recommendation for visitors spending a day or longer in Frigiliana.

Would we return? Yes – and next time we’d be very tempted to work our way through a few more of those camperos.
