If you are looking for somewhere to enjoy a glass of local wine in Frigiliana, Vinos El Lagar Frigiliana is well worth a stop. This tiny wine shop and bar sits at the beginning of Calle Real, making it an ideal place for a drink before exploring Frigiliana’s historic old town or for a well-earned rest after tackling its steep streets.
Local Moscatel wine in Frigiliana
We stopped at Vinos El Lagar to try a glass of the local Moscatel wine, one of the drinks most closely associated with this part of Andalucía.
Produced using Muscat grapes, the wine has a naturally sweet and aromatic character. Served chilled, it was refreshing despite its rich flavour, with notes of ripe grapes, honey and dried fruit. It is certainly sweet, so it is best sipped slowly rather than treated like a regular glass of white wine.
The fragrant Moscatel worked particularly well as an afternoon drink in the sunshine. It is also a good introduction to the traditional wines of the Axarquía region, where Muscat grapes have been grown on the steep hillsides for generations.
Vinos El Lagar offers sweet, semi-sweet and dry styles, making it a handy place to discover which type of local Frigiliana wine you prefer. Bottles and other regional products are also available to buy inside the shop.
One of the best bar views in Frigiliana
As enjoyable as the wine was, the view is the real reason to linger at Vinos El Lagar.
The outdoor drinking area is simple, with high tables and barrels rather than a polished restaurant terrace. However, its elevated position provides a magnificent panoramic view across the surrounding mountains, whitewashed houses and green countryside towards Nerja and the Mediterranean Sea.
On a clear day, the blue of the sea appears in the distance beyond the hills. It is a lovely spot to pause, sip a chilled glass of Moscatel and watch the changing light across the landscape.
We first visited Vinos El Lagar around 16 years ago, when Frigiliana, and this little bar, felt much quieter. The secret is definitely out now, and its few outdoor tables and barrels are quickly snapped up by visitors. Look how young Mark looks, he still likes a glass of muscat!
If you see a free table, get in quickly. Seating is limited, particularly during busy afternoons and at weekends, and the best spots overlooking the valley do not tend to remain empty for long.
The bar is also excellent for people-watching. Calle Real is the main route into Frigiliana’s Moorish old town, so there is always a steady flow of visitors beginning or ending their walk through the village.
Despite its growing popularity, Vinos El Lagar remains relaxed and unpretentious. There is no need to dress up or make a reservation. Simply order a drink, find an available spot outside and enjoy the scenery.

Is Vinos El Lagar worth visiting?
Yes. Vinos El Lagar is one of the best places for affordable drinks with a view in Frigiliana. The combination of local Moscatel wine, an informal atmosphere and sweeping views towards the coast makes it an easy place to recommend. It may look more like a small shop than a conventional bar, but that is part of its charm.
This is not somewhere for elaborate cocktails or a long sit-down meal. Instead, visit for a simple glass of wine or cold beer, perhaps accompanied by a small plate of cheese, olives or cured meat.
For us, returning around ten years after our first visit made the stop feel particularly nostalgic. Frigiliana may be busier than we remembered, but a chilled glass of sweet Moscatel enjoyed while looking across the mountains towards the Mediterranean remains a wonderfully simple pleasure.
