Top 5 things to do in Bamberg, Germany

If you like history, and all within walking distance as well as shopping, drinking beer and eating, then Bamberg in Germany is an ideal place for a break.

The historic city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is an excellent example of a medieval town. Mix this with a smattering of breweries, boutiques and friendly inhabitants, there isn't a more perfect place for a short break.

1. Visit the Old Town Hall and Little Venice

Altes Rathaus, Old Town Hall

The spot for romance, photographic opportunities and even an ice cream. The Altes Rathaus Altes Rathaus Old Town Hall is covered with a giant fresco and is the ideal spot for some photographs. Pull yourself away and look North to Little Venice. Klein Venedig (Klein Venedig is a gathering of picturesque fishermen's houses from the 19th century along one side of the river Regnitz.

2. Michaelsberg Abbey

Sat atop one of the seven hills of Bamberg the panoramic views as well as  the architecture and history are worth  the wander up. This former Benedictine abbey traces its  roots back to 1015.  Michaelsberg

3. Shop

From Lederhosen to Dirndls and to German toys and even a year round Christmas shop (Kathe Wohlfarcht)  . The Baroque styled buildings and wandering streets will ensure shopping is not a chore.

4. Bamberg Cathedral

Bamberg Cathedral  Bamberg Cathedral( Bamberger Dom St. Peter und St. Georg) was founded in 1002 and the present day building dates from 13th Century.  See if you can find the questrian statue of the Bamberg Horseman (Der Bamberger Reiter)

5. Of course, visit the breweries

Take a beer tour with a pack from the Tourist Information Office and see if you can visit all of Bamberg's breweries.  Famous for their smokey beer (Rauchbier), it is a must try, especially with some sausage.
