Stay – Royal Golf Hotel, Dornoch

Spectacular Views over Royal Dornoch Golf Course

The Royal Golf Hotel is a 5-minute walk away from the centre of Dornoch if you are getting public transport (Check your journey here) and right on the doorstep to Royal Dornoch Golf Course and Dornoch beach.

Check-in was quick and easy, and with that, we made our way up to our room.

Look at that view!

Bedroom

A comfortable double room with astounding views. Plump pillows, a mattress I didn’t want to leave plus TV, wifi and tea/coffee.

Bathroom

Everything that we needed in the bathroom was here, with the bonus of my fave, Arran After the Rain toiletries.

There’s even a view of the golf course from the bathroom!

After a wander around Dornoch (Click here to read what we got up to) it was time to return to Royal Golf Hotel in their Crenshaw’s Brasserie.  Named after the American golfer Ben Crenshaw who was not only a fan of the course at Royal Dornoch Golf Club, but is an honorary member as well.

The menu here is wide-ranging using Scottish produce with a modern slant.  We chose aged local beef tataki with wasabi, pumpkin seed and caramelised onion. Tataki is a Japanese preparation, where meat is seared and quickly cooled to halt the cooking process.

As well as pan-seared shetland scallops with pickled celeriac caramelised apple and ginger puree and Stornoway black pudding.

For mains, roast rack of Highland lamb, fennel crust, shallots, pickled pumpkin, whipped potato and a tamarind jus.  Plus baby back ribs with a chilli and honey glaze, truffle Mac and cheese, chilli buttered corn and pak choi.

We were stuffed by dessert so shared a Highland cheese selection with Minger, Blue Murder, Morangie Brie, Tain Truckle and Orkney smoked cheddar.

We peeled ourselves out of our comfortable beds for a leisurely breakfast.  A special shout out for the Kames smoked trout with scrambled egg.

Golf at Royal Golf Hotel Dornoch

As you can no doubt guess from the name, Royal Dornoch golf course is on the doorstep of the Royal Golf Hotel. The course was founded in 1895. The course is accessible to visitors 7 days a week and it’s easy to book online. The online widget allows you to book months in advance.

Verdict

A beach and a golf course on its doorstep make the Royal Golf Hotel in Dornoch an easy pick for a relaxing break. Stunning views made our comfortable room even better. We really could have been happy sitting at our window with a pot of tea looking out to the view.
