Lunch at EH15 Restaurant & Bar, Edinburgh
Hidden inside Edinburgh College, EH15 Restaurant & Bar is one of the city’s best kept lunchtime secrets. This training restaurant gives Edinburgh College hospitality students the chance to hone their skills in a real restaurant environment, serving a regularly changing set lunch menu to the public. The result? Proper restaurant-quality food at some of the best prices you’ll find in Edinburgh. We popped in to try the set lunch menu.

EH15 Restaurant is in The Hub building and on the third floor, there is a lift for access.
A stunning view towards the city of Edinburgh from their herb garden. This terrace was used until, sadly, the neighbours decided people eating lunch thought looking into windows and gardens was worthy of attention. Be good to have the terrace open in the summer for lunches.

What we ate
First up, the all-important bread and butter! A Scottish morning roll, more dense than expected, so more like a cob loaf in texture. Still a good roll and butter.

On to the starters. Mark loves a good soup and this is one dish which is often a test of the basics in any kitchen. This cauliflower soup was smooth, well-seasoned and comforting.

Haggis Bon Bons with a turnip puree and whisky sauce. Crispy haggis bonbons served with a creamy, but not heavy whisky sauce. The haggis had a slight peppery tingle which worked well with the creamy sauce.

Goat’s cheese and red onion tart. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of goats cheese, however, I was willing to give this a try, and I’m glad I did. The onions were delicious, sweet against the earthy and acidic notes of the cheese.

Onto the mains, confit chicken with a thyme jus and seasonal vegetables. Crispy skin and a moist and tender interior made this chicken wow. Perfectly cooked and seasoned vegetables as well.

Fillet of seabass with a herb oil and seasonal vegetables. Another tasty dish, however…we would have liked the skin to have been crispy for maximum tastiness. The seabass and the herb oil is a simple combo that works.

Roasted aubergine steak marinated in miso and harissa. This wasn’t one of your spongy slices of aubergine, tenderly roasted and filled with flavour. The harissa especially packed a punch.

Time for desserts, we just had space for this, and just look at the size of it!

Chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream and shortbread. The chocolate aroma as the plate was set down will live in my nose for a while! A thick slice of gooey brownie, it did everything it said it would.
The other dessert choice was a cheese plate with grapes, crackers, home-made apple jelly and what must be the skinniest slivers of apple I’ve ever seen – obviously used all the apple in the jelly 😉

Verdict
EH15 Restaurant is a reminder that some of the best meals can be found in unexpected places, while also supporting the next generation of hospitality staff. The atmosphere was welcoming, and we thought the food was excellent value for money. If you are looking for an affordable lunch in the Edinburgh area, EH15 is definitely worth a visit.
