Historic Environment Scotland is once again opening the doors to some of the country’s favourite attractions for over the winter months.
The return of the Historic Sundays scheme means everyone living in Scotland can get free access to some of Scotland’s favourite historic sites on the first Sunday of ever month from October until March 2026.

There are sites across the country, including Edinburgh Castle, Linlithgow Palace and Stirling Castle, but locations go well beyond just the central belt and includes places like Skara Brae on Orkney, Melrose Abbey in the Borders, St. Andrews Castle in Fife and Fort George near Inverness.
It’s a popular scheme and some locations are already fully booked for the first Sunday of October, but there will be other dates available for forthcoming months. Tickets are made available each month for the next free date and details of when they’re available will be announced on the Historic Sundays website.

Historic Sundays is a great opportunity to take a look at the nation’s history up close, and to explore new places either on your doorstep or further afield, or just to enjoy a day out. The free tickets are available for a maximum group of two adults and six children.
The offer is available online only, and places need be booked in advance at the Historic Sundays website.
