Jazz Interpretations Of The Blue Nile Songbook
Following on from their projects celebrating the music of Joni Mitchell and The Pearlfishers, the Colin Steele Quartet joined Glasgow Jazz Festival to celebrate the release of their latest recording – The Blue Nile – Jazz Interpretations Of The Blue Nile Songbook.
Colin and his quartet, consisting of Dave Milligan (piano), Calum Gourlay (bass) and Alyn Cosker (drums) superbly give a jazz twist to the soulful music of The Blue Nile. Listening to the trumpet was just like listening to the melancholy singing of Paul Buchanan.
The night started not with what have been apt for the weather heatwave, but with the classic Downtown Lights. Each tune brought the same thoughs, will my own favourite The Blue Nile tune make it?
It was easy to relax into this evening of toe tapping jazz and imagine Paul Buchanan being there, he was in spirit with a note and flowers delivered for the quartet.
Classic The Blue Nile melodies such as Easter Parade with the morose intro superbly captured by double bassist Calum Gourlay, Headlights on the Parade to Let’s go out tonight. The balance of The Blue Nile heartache, alongside the funk/jazz mix was a winner for us.vI think Paul Buchanan would be proud of this interpretation.
P.S – but where is the cover photography from?
