This classic British picnic favourite doesn’t need to be greasy. Air Fryer Scotch Eggs are easy to make and have a crispy crust. Once you make these, you won’t be eating another poorly made shop-bought Scotch egg again.
I love eggs be them poached, scrambled or boiled and encase them in some tasty sausagemeat and I’m happy. Unfortunately, many shop made Scotch eggs are poorly made tasteless things. These are meaty, crispy crusted, tasty good uns. Have them for breakfast, brunch, lunch as a snack, at-home beer nights and when on a picnic. Try this with our smashed cucumber salad or Shirazi salad.
What is a Scotch Egg?
A Scotch egg is a soft or hard-boiled egg wrapped in ground sausagemeat and then coated with bread crumbs and baked or deep fried. I have no idea how Scotch eggs came to be however a google says…The Oxford English Dictionary gives the first instance of the name as 1809, in an edition of Maria Rundell’s A New System of Domestic Cookery. London department store Fortnum & Mason claims to have invented Scotch eggs in 1738, as a traveller’s snack and helped make them popular by including them in their hampers. Today you will find Scotch eggs in supermarkets, pubs and even petrol stations.
Egg boiling time
For ease of eating when at a picnic, I usually have a hard-boiled egg. A soft-boiled egg is ideal if eating with a knife and fork.

Hi
I’ve never seen sugar used in the crum coating before. Can you explain why you’ve added it, please?
hello, Thanks for asking as it is unusual. I’ve added it as due to using the air fryer and not frying the colour and that maillard taste may be missed. Feel free to omit it if its not to your taste. ❤️
