We began with gravlax trout, pickled beets, dill buttermilk and puffed buckwheat.

The combination brings together cured fish, the acidity of pickled beetroot and the familiar partnership of trout and dill. Buttermilk and puffed buckwheat add contrasting elements, making this a light entry to the roast dinner to follow.

Although our visit centred on Sunday lunch, the trout starter also reflects iasg’s seafood identity. The restaurant takes its name from the Gaelic word for fish.

Seafood and more on Blythswood Square

For our main courses, we ordered roast rump of beef and Blythswood porchetta.

Beef is the traditional Sunday roast choice, while porchetta offers another option for those who prefer pork. The pork belly was *chef’s kiss*

Both were served with roast potatoes, glazed carrots and celeriac, tenderstem broccoli, braised hispi cabbage, a Yorkshire pudding and gravy giving us plenty to work through with each roast.A cheeky extra: crispy Brussels sprouts

Despite all those trimmings, we added crispy Brussels sprouts with chimichurri.
Sprouts need not be confined to Christmas dinner, and chimichurri takes them in a different direction from their usual festive preparation. It is an interesting addition to a table already filled with roast meat, vegetables and gravy.

This was the little extra that made our order a little different.  We liked the idea, however the chimichurri didn’t have as much of a presence as we would have liked.

Reign of Terror Pinotage

Our wine was Reign of Terror Pinotage, bringing a red wine into the mix alongside the beef and porchetta. Noyes from Matk include lovely aroma – leather, pepper, talcum powder, plum, blackcurrant jam. Dry, medium-+ acidity. Cherry, cranberry taste. An enjoyable wine.

Chocolate crémeux and an espresso

Mark finished with dark chocolate crémeux, coffee caramel and clotted cream ice cream, followed by an espresso.

Chocolate and coffee are a natural pairing, while the clotted cream ice cream adds another layer to the dessert. It is an indulgent combination to follow a roast dinner, and a reason to think about leaving room for something sweet when ordering.

Foodie Explorers Verdict on Sunday Roast at iasg

Top notch food again from iasg.  The Gravlax trout starter brought something different from the usual smoked salmon on many menus.

The pork porchetta was delicious, herby and the layers of fat were soft and succulent, adding richness to the pork.

And what about those chonky slices of beef rump?!  Put it this way, Mark was very quiet during the meal!
