Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian review

25/05/2021 by Emma Leave a Comment

Staycation offer for Scottish residents

With a chance to get away finally and have a belated birthday celebration for Mr Foodie, we took advantage of The Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Scotland Resident Offer (which runs until 31st May 2021). There were lots of boxes ticked for us with this deal such as early check-in, a chilled bottle of Champagne, a choice of in-room gin or whisky flights or self shake martinis (woohoo). There is also access to the health club with 25% off spa treatments and a room upgrade to the next category. Top this off with breakfast either in Peacock Alley or in your room and a late check-out. Sounded like just what we were looking for!

Checking in was easy with one of the many things I like about The Caledonian is the scent in the foyer. I have no idea what it is, but just walking in and smelling it makes me feel relaxed [EDIT: we now think this is Guerlain Orchidee Imperiale home fragrance which is available from the Guerlain Spa on the ground floor]. There were screens, sanitiser and all sorts of new COVID rules around, but we still felt special.

The Room

This was a King Premier Room, spacious with a high ceiling, Waldorf Astoria bedding on a king-sized bed and blackout curtains. A Nespresso coffee machine and an LCD TV. Luxurious bathrobes, slippers and exclusive Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries plus ironing board etc. as expected in a 5-star hotel room. Unfortunately, the minibar was empty due to COVID though.

The bathroom came equipped with a full range of toiletries including mouthwash and HUGE bath towels.

We soon settled into the room relaxing with the chilled bottle of Laurent-Perrier champagne and the gin flight which was included in The Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Scotland Resident Offer. We could get used to this!

Breakfast

After a peaceful nights sleep and because we were on a totally decadent experience, we decided to have our breakfast served in our room. Unlike in normal times, there was no menu to hang onto the door to select our breakfast, COVID rules state that the order was to be phoned down.

Our full order didn't arrive and it didn't run as smoothly as it should have - Mr Foodie didn't get his main breakfast dish, and Mrs Foodie had the wrong eggs, so another visit from room service was required - the hotel had only been open for a couple of days when we visited so can safely put this down to teething issues after being unable to welcome guests for so long and having to comply with new rules. We still had that special feeling of having breakfast rolled into our room as we lounged in our bathrobes.

Overall

Overall, an excellent stay with a few wee issues as a result of just opening and having new COVID procedures to follow. We have stayed here before and would happily stay again. The location is excellent and the hotel is in tip-top condition. We got a special rate for our stay with lots of goodies thrown in at no extra cost, see below for more details and how to book.
