New Edinburgh craft beer bar Porty Vault opens

12/07/2022 by Emma Leave a Comment

36 tap taproom from Vault City Brewery

With a 36-tap bar serving up to 24 Vault City beers – including their White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake and Tonka Black Forrest Gateau flavoured brews, as well as a range of guest beers, wines, mead and cider, the Porty Vault is certainly a destination in itself. Opening a taproom on Portobello High Street makes a lot of sense given the brewery is just a short walk away, on the other side of the A199.

The favourites from our visit were Carrot Cake and Banana split, which are a bit niche and novelty as I can't say we've ever had a beer mimicking carrot cake or banana split before! Although they are considered 'sour' beers they still have a fair amount of sweetness compared to other breweries, with an aroma and taste to match their description. We're not normally fans of sour beers as we find that they often just taste like bitter lemon but the flavours here really stand out. Note that their beers pack a punch with many around the 8% mark but some are even stronger, including their collaboration with Brewgooder and Bruichladdich, a barrel aged whisky sour, which comes in at 11% and has been nominated for brewing product of the year at the Scottish Food & Drink Excellence Awards is also on tap. Most of their own beers also seem to be vegan too, and if you run out of Vault City beer to try, remember that they also have rotational taps from other local and respected breweries.
