Memorial to the first person shot and killed at the Berlin Wall
Gunter Litfin was the first person to be shot and killed at the Berlin Wall, and the Günter Litfin Memorial was created to honor him and others who died.
This former command post at Kieler Eck was a base for the DDR border troops at the Berlin-Spandau canal.
There were 280 watchtowers along the Berlin Wall, of these, 32 were command posts. This meant that officers based here issued orders to the soldiers on duty patrolling the border.

On 24th August 1961, just 11 days after the Berlin Wall was built, Gunter Litfin was shot and killed whilst trying to escape.
A memorial stone, dedicated to Gunter, was placed at Sandkrug Bridge in 1962, and was moved in 2015 to the site of where Gunter was shot and killed.

After the wall fell, Günters brother, Jürgen campaigned to have the command post preserved as a memorial. Jurgen Litfin opened the memorial on 24th August 2003.
There is another memorial to Günter located at the Brandenburg Gate end of Tiergarten.
