48 Hours in Bautzen – where to eat, drink and sleep
The medieval Saxony town of Bautzen is just an hour by train from Dresden, or do as we did and take the local train from Gorlitz (worth a 48-hour visit in itself see our posts here) Get lost in the old town streets, or try and find all 17 of the towers. There are remnants of the old GDR here with Bautzen Memorial Prison, sample some of the famous Bautzen mustard, learn about the indigenous people, the Sorbians or wander around town with a monk. Here is a suggested itinerary so you can get a taste of Bautzen in a couple of days.

Where to stay in Bautzen
Suite Hans at Gersdorff Palace
We stayed at Suite Hans at Gersdorff Palace which was in the centre of the old town, so a great base for exploring the city. It was a comfortable and cosy suite and an excuse to say that we stayed in a palace for the night!

Day 1
3 pm Check-in and tourist information office

Once you have checked into your accommodation, make a visit to the Bautzen Tourist Information Office to get the latest information and pick up some souvenirs alongside a copy of the town map – or use our map here!

4 pm Get your bearings and wander around town
Sort out your bearings and take a walk around the town. We suggest starting with a walk down the Reichenstrassee off the main square towards the Reichenturm. The Reichenturm is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April to October.

6 pm Dinner time
There are a wide variety of restaurants, pubs and bars in Bautzen. We dinned in Monschof, which means Monk’s Court. I’ll link to a review here whenever Mark writes it up!

8 pm Tour the city with a monk
Enjoy a guided tour with Monk Eusebius as he takes you around the streets of Bautzen and shares stories from his life.

Day 2
10 am Visit a museum
There are two museums worth taking the time out to visit. Find out about 1,000 years of the history of Bautzen at Museum Bautzen. The other museum worth a visit is the Sorbian Museum where you can find out all about the Slavic minority who live in the area.

12 pm Take time out for lunch
Alte Bierhof was our choice for a lunch stop as it had the name bier in it for Mark … we were rewarded with a glorious view from the dining area as well as tasty food and drink. It was proper radler weather when we visited, so a couple were quaffed – just to check the standard of course 😉 (Radler is the German name for a shandy, a mixture of lemonade and beer)

2 p.m. Visit the Mustard Museum and enjoy the sights
We are still thinking about food even after some lunch. A visit to the Bautzner Senf museum will give you the background on what makes Bautzen Mustard so good.

Walk off lunch with a wander around the town, we found a picturesque viewpoint beside the local sports centre.

6 pm Dinner
Where to eat in Bautzen include – Zur Apotheke, Spreeblick Restaurant and Brewery or Restaurant Burghof.
8 pm Relax with an after-dinner walk.
Wander along the alleys or take a walk down to Friedensbrücke Bridge where you will see a view of the town lit up at night.
