Everything you need to know about visiting Annandale Distillery
Whisky distilleries aren’t just found in the highlands of Scotland, did you know there is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland just at the border in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway? Here is everything we know about visiting Annandale Distillery.
Founded in 1836 by George Donald, Annandale was among Scotland’s early legal whisky distilleries, chosen for its abundant water, local peat, and ideal maturation climate. After George’s passing in 1883, John Sykes Gardner took over and modernised operations. Then, in 1893, Johnnie Walker & Sons acquired Annandale and operated the site until just after World War I. By 1924, the site was in the hands of the Robinson family and repurposed for farming.
The revival of whisky production in Annan began in 2007, when Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church purchased and embarked on an ambitious restoration project.
In November 2014, the distillery’s visitor centre reopened and the first casks were filled, marking a triumphant return to whisky production.

There are two signature expressions at Annandale Distillery:-
Man O’ Words — un-peated, smooth and named after Robert Burns, the famous local bard.
Man O’ Sword — peated, smoky, named after Robert the Bruce, former Lord of Annandale.

Partially. The McCalls 385 bus runs from Dumfries to Annan. It does not pass Annan train station itself, but the closest stop to the distillery is Guysgill, which is a 20-minute walk away. Do not stay on until the last stop and note that the bus does not run on Sundays. Otherwise, the distillery is a 35-minute walk from Annan train station, or you can book a taxi. If you intend to use a taxi make sure to book in advance as there are only a handful of drivers in the area. Irving’s (07399 787817) was the driver recommended to us but he was not available during our visit so booking days/weeks in advance is essential!
