The Captain Cook Inn, Staithes
Sitting at the top of the village of Staithes, The Captain Cook Inn has free parking on site, local beer, views from the rooms, and is situated between the bus stop and picturesque older village below, making it ideal for people like us, travelling around Yorkshire by public transport. If you are looking for where to stay in Staithes, we would recommend booking here. Find out why below.
As well as being on the Cleveland Way and within easy reach of Whitby and Saltburn for more touristic explorations, this pub with rooms is perfectly situated for most travellers (as there is no lift).
Checking in was quick so in no time we were in our room, enjoying the view with a cup of tea and biscuit in hand.
Bedroom
We were given a spacious room on the second floor with everything we needed for a short stay – free WiFi, ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hospitality tray with biscuits and mugs for a proper cuppa. Plus, seats with a view across the green landscape.
The bed was a bit low and the mattress on the very soft side, however the sheets were clean and comfy, and we still slept well.
The bathroom was also clean and tidy with a towel heater and toiletries. There wasn’t a curtain on the window though, so it was a tad chilly.
Our window looked out over fields for miles, and in the distance you will see the tower of ICL Bouldby. If you want to know more about it then there is information in the shelter for the nearest bus stop.
As you can see, Mark had to take some photos to read later as our bus was due!
In between the art on show (which is also for sale) in the stairwell and hallway, you’ll find old images of Staithes.
This one shows the old railway viaduct, and we could see one of the old pillars from the bedroom window.
Dinner menu at The Captain Cook Inn
We weren’t too hungry after breakfast at our last hotel and lunch in the village so only ordered a single main course and they also had a special – Cajun chicken and chips for a mere £9.95, so we ordered that. The chicken was very salty, a bit too much, so that’s possibly why it was a ‘special’. Still ate it though; the chips were decent and the salad fresh.
Breakfast
Available to order is the Captain Cook Full Breakfast – 2 bacon, 2 sausages, black pudding, egg, beans, mushrooms, fresh tomato, hash brown and toast; smoked kipper served with fresh bread and butter; poached or scrambled egg on toast alongside a buffet offering cereal, fresh fruit and yoghurt.
The full breakfast was surprisingly good quality and a good portion to set you up for the day.
We also had the kipper. A superb kipper, which was cooked properly and served with a lemon slice. Both breakfasts filled our bellies and prepared us for a day of travelling homeward.
Overall verdict
The Captain Cook Inn, Staithes is an ideal base for discovering not only the village of Staithes, but also nearby Whitby and Saltburn. We had everything we needed in the room, with the bonus of a restaurant and bar downstairs. Dinner was fine for the price and the breakfast was great quality and filling. There is free parking on site and buses between Middlesborough and Whitby stop just a 5-min walk away.
WiFi in the bar area was poor, and although we both slept well the mattress was very soft when we prefer it to be firmer. We would still happily stay here again though.
