Celtic Connections storms ahead with ambitious work from Yann Tiersen

Breton Composer Yann Tiersen, mainly known for his Amelie and Goodbye Lenin scores, presented his latest work, Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour.

This was an ambitious piece of work split into two parts. Part one consisted of delicate and minimal piano which created a haunting and introspective atmosphere in the fruitmarket.  Soothing and reflective music.

In comparison, the second part of the concert when Tiersen moves onto his synth, is filled with swelling bass, club driven tracks heavily influenced by Jean Michelle Jarre. This section utilises the earlier introspective vibe to rouse the listener into action.

Both parts transfer the listener to powerful places, if only the gig was longer.
