No need to be vegan to enjoy the burgers and dogs at Bath St. Burger

January is Veganuary (How do you pronounce this without it sounding a bit weird?!) so we thought we’d try out the vegan options at Bath St. Burger in Glasgow’s city centre.

Interior

Inside it ticks all the hipster boxes, ghetto blasters, vinyl, a Bourdain pic and rogue one graffiti on one wall. It is also clean, comfortable and welcoming (so much so that Mrs Foodie has been has been back for beef burgers with Colonel Mustard!).

Menu

The vegetarian-friendly options are listed with a V, with a leafy V signifying completely vegan.

Drink

No need to miss out on a beer if you are vegan, almost all the beer here is vegan (8 beers and lagers on our count). Below, we have Cybernaut, a hazy session IPA with juicy tropical flavours, and Lost Lager, which despite being clear is vegan. Both are brewed by Brewdog.

Food

We love Padron peppers so had to order some to nibble on, foodie Russian roulette. No hot ones this time just salty, peppery deliciousness.  We shared a Le Freak, which is spiced roasted cauliflower, freekeh wheat, crispy kale pomegranate & pumpkin seeds, topped with a tahini dressing and sumac.  More cauliflower love at this table so thumbs up from both of us.  This is more of what Mr Foodie likes in comparison to Mrs Foodie, and the tahini gives it a creamy cheese-like taste, which is missing from a lot of vegan options.  Lots of forkfuls later and we had an empty bowl!

Mrs Foodie threw caution to the wind and ordered a vegan dog with smoked Gouda vegan and gherkin relish.  Not having tried vegan dogs before Mrs Foodie found it to be sweet and malty like Screen malt loaf – is this usually the case?  Will need to research this more.  The texture was firm and unlike regular hot dogs, there was no grease and fat to dribble all over the place.  The bun lasted to the very end and held up well to all the toppings.

Mr Foodie picked an Earth, Wind and Fire burger which consists of Moving Mountains® 100% plant-based burger patty, smoked Gouda vegan cheese, jalapeño veganaise, jalapeños pulled jackfruit chilli, lettuce,  tomato, red onion and hot sauce – that’s a list of ingredients.  You will see it certainly looked it as well.  A dirty burger and a handful.  Get your napkins ready!

Bath Street burger vegan review foodie explorersThis is a good meat imposter, which looks pretty much like the real thing. Texture-wise it was very soft so felt like a medium-rare burger. It wasn’t as greasy and fatty as a real meat burger and we both agreed that we wouldn’t hesitate to pick this again.  Maybe two patties instead of the one though to give it a bit more presence amongst the toppings?Bath Street burger vegan review foodie explorers

Toilet check

Toilets are downstairs and labelled for Fly Girls and B-Boys.  Clean and tidy with good hand dryer action!

Verdict

Thumbs up from both of us to the Earth, Wind and Fire vegan burger.  Lots of taste, flavours and a filling meal.  The vegan dog was tasty, but not quite as expected!  A sweet dish, instead of the usual savoury, fatty sausage.  The Le Freak wasn’t freaky at all, creamy tahini, on point cauliflower and lots of middle-eastern flavours.  If you are looking for a lighter tasting lunch, then this is for you and not just for vegans.  Less grease and more flavour! Service was very attentive and friendly too. Bath St burger is also handle placed for public transport  – some buses stop across the road and Queen St train station and Buchanan St underground station and just a block or two away.

TL;DR

+ Earth, Wind and Fire Burger was impressive for meat-free
+ Perfect Padron peppers
+ Tasty salad dish
+ Lots of vegan beers
+ Toilets get pass marks

– Vegan dog a bit sweet
