The Wheel Inn, 37 Angus Road, Scone

wheel inn scone perth outsideThe Wheel Inn, Scone is located a short trip from Perth city centre, it can be reached by the number 7 Stagecoach Gold bus from Perth and takes 15 – 20 minutes, there is a stop just after the pub on the main road (Perth Rd which becomes Angus Rd) or you can wait until the busturns around for it’s journey back into Perth (best check with the driver though) and there’s a stop right beside it.

It has a cask marque and when we visited two real ales were on: Ossian from nearby Inveralmond and Bitter and Twisted from the Harviestoun brewery.

There’s a bar and a surprisingly large restaurant. We ate in the restaurant and thankfully on the cold day we visited there was an open gas fire, so we scooted to a seat beside it.

wheel inn scone perth soupMixed veg soup, pea based with (we think) potato and celery, perhaps parsnip, but it tasted mostly like pea soup.  It also came with croutons,  a warm roll and soft butter.  A great home-made tasting soup.

wheel inn scone perth pate

3 sliced of course Pâté ready cut on 3 oatcakes. Chutney had a kick, fresh salad, lettuce leaves, strong red onion. Pate had not too strong a flavour and the chutney worked well with the pate.  Enjoyed this one. Off to a good start.

wheel inn scone perth steak sandwichSteak sandwich – Ciabatta nice and fresh but the steak was a little chewy for me, good portion of chips though.

wheel inn scone perth mac and cheese with bacon

Mac n cheese with added bacon for £1.  Cheesy mac n cheese.  The bacon was a bonus addition, would recommend it for a slight change of flavour.

wheel inn scone perth cheesecake

Lemon and lime cheesecake with choice of cream or ice cream. Proper cheesy cheesecake with a tart passion fruit sauce, which was pretty decent. If you don’t want a full-on dessert they also sell tray-bake style cakes for taking away.

Overall, great homely style no-nonsense food, friendly and helpful service. Ample parking with beer garden and play area outside for children; indoors there is also a separate area for kids with games/toys and a TV in case you want to eat in the restaurant but don’t want to miss a sporting event. Also free WIFI!
