Prep ahead for Christmas in the traditional way by making your Christmas pudding, cake, or mincemeat before the start of Advent and allowing flavours to mature. This year, Stir-up Sunday falls on Sunday 24th November.  But what is Stir-up Sunday, what do you make on Stir-up Sunday and how to get ahead with your Christmas Day cooking.

What is Stir-up Sunday?

Stir-up Sunday is an annual tradition where home-cooks spend the last Sunday before Advent ‘stirring up’ their Christmas pudding. The family would get together to prepare Christmas treats that needed a few extra hands, such as stirring together thick Christmas pudding mixture.

Which recipes are made on Stir-up Sunday?

Traditionally, the Christmas pudding is made on Stir-up Sunday.  Mincemeat for mince pies and Christmas cakes cake also be made today.  This will give time for the flavours to develop for eating at Christmas.

Get ahead with Christmas Day Cooking

Not only is Stir-up Sunday a handy tradition to remember to give your Christmas pudding or cake time to mature, use this time to think ahead on what you can also prepare and store before Christmas Day itself such as making roast potatoes or Yorkshire puddings and freezing them.
