Review: Rannoch Station Tearoom, Perthshire

Cosy and homely Rannoch Station Tearoom

Exploring Scotland leads to stumbling across the occasional hidden gem and this tearoom situated inside the remote Rannoch Station is an oasis at the end of the long road from Pitlochry and Perthshire.

The tearoom attracts railway geeks, walkers, cyclists and day-trippers seeking sustinence.  Next door, in the former waiting room, is an exhibition on Rannoch Moor and the history of the railway. There are no other tea rooms for miles so the space is kept open when the cafe is closed for an emergency cuppa and has an honesty box for payment!

We had stayed over night at the moor of Rannoch hotel so had a little time for a cuppa and cake before our onward train.

The small cafe is kept clean and tidy with all sorts of amusing ephemera on the wall and shelves. It was also quite busy with passengers ready to join us on the next train. Should it be a pleasant day then there is also some picnic tables on the platform outside!

Food

It would have been most rude to be in a tearoom and not have both tea and cake.  So, we struggled along by sharing a slice of ‘lumberjack’ cake with an excellent cup of Yorkshire tea each.

Lumberjack cake is a moist apple and date cake with a caramelised coconut topping. It’s not a fluffy afternoon tea kinda cake but one which is substantial and comforting.  👍 from us both.  The caramelised topping of brown sugar, butter and coconut made this cake awesome.

Verdict

👍👍 friendly service and delicious cake. Plus Yorkshire tea, which is a fave of ours.  Good tea, cake, cosy and friendly people.  Really not more we need in a cafe.  Do check that the tearoom is open before visiting. It is planned to reopen for the season this weekend!
