Reminder from Martin Lewis on Health Insurance Card

City break flying airport

Martin Lewis has returned with his Martin Lewis Money Show Live programme, and one piece of news we thought we would share was that he explained how to get new Global Health Insurance Card which replaces EHIC (European Health Insurance Card)

EHIC card

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is being phased out following the Brexit deal in favour of the new, free Global card.

Martin explained: “The new Global card [GHIC] covers the 27 countries in the European Union, the old European card [EHIC] covers the 27 countries in the European Union plus four more.”

“Both are about covering and giving you treatment abroad in state-run hospitals or GP surgeries at the same cost of a local, so free for a local, free for you and it includes pre-existing conditions.”

The card is FREE from the official NHS site, don’t use any other sites.

Martin Lewis, The founder of MoneySavingExpert. com also advised: “If you’ve got your EHIC, you don’t need one of these as long as it’s still valid it turns into a GHIC automatically. Once it expires you’ll get a GHIC after that.”

You will still need travel insurance, as you did before.

How to apply for a GHIC

You need to go via the official NHS and UK Government website here.
