Leche de Pantera AKA Panther Milk

What is Panther Milk and how do you make it?  Panthers Milk or ‘Leche de Pantera, seems to be a staple in Barcelona bars.  Its reputation has spread throughout Europe and there are even bars in Glasgow which serve this delight.  Bought by the bottle and shared with friends over the evening, which is a little difficult in COVID-19 times hence why are suggesting making this very boozy concoction at home!

History of the cocktail

Originating in the 1920s as the favoured drink of the Spanish Foreign Legion.  Soldiers would mix any alcohol they could find with condensed milk for quick pain relief. Between the 1920s and 1970s, Panther Milk was mostly forgotten until a former Spanish Legionnaire opened a bar called La Barretina on Carrer de la Mercè. Students loved the drink and so across the street, Tasca El Corral joined in.  This time making a pink version by adding grenadine.  La Barretina is now closed, however, you can still pop into Tasca El Corral for “pink panther milk” (Leche de Pantera rosa). You can also add a bar spoon of creme de menthe for a green version, which is our personal favourite. Add grated cinnamon or nutmeg to top it off.
