Product Review: McIntosh of Dyce – haggis & mince pies

Mcintosh of dyce haggis and meat scotch pie

We might be food bloggers who visit the occasional Michelin-starred restaurant but we still enjoy the simpler things in life such as a pie (especially with Mrs Foodie being a World Scotch Pie Championship Judge!) and with Burns night fast approaching what better time to try out McIntosh of Dyce’s latest haggis & Scotch pie hybrid?

Released towards the end of 2014 the pies just look like regular Scotch pies and are more-or-less Scotch pies except that they have some haggis in the mix. You can cook them in the microwave but pies are always better in the oven, so we put ours in for about 25 minutes at a medium heat and they came out piping hot.

The verdict – the filling has a good consistency with firm pastry base and sides  (Mrs Foodie passed on her judging tips) – not soggy but perhaps could do with a little gravy. Now all you need is some neeps and tatties for on top – we were boring and just had them with baked beans (which works too!).

Ideal winter food if staying in and celebrating Burns night in front of the TV!

The pies are available in both Asda and Sainsburys retailing at £1.20 for a pack of 2 pies, but both supermarkets currently have them on promotion for Burns Night at around £1.

Many thanks to McIntosh of Dyce for supplying samples to try.

P.S. Mrs Foodie is a big fan of their macaroni cheese!
