Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana wins for the second time
A humble-looking restaurant in the Italian city of Modena in the heart of the Italian gastronomic region of Emilia-Romagna, has ousted New York City’s Eleven Madison Park from the top spot in the restaurant industry’s most prestigious award, The World’s 50 Best, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna.
Osteria Francescana, had previously won the award in 2016 and finished runner-up last year. An osteria is traditionally somewhere serving simple food and wine, maybe not so for Osteria Francescana, which The world’s 50 best describes as “one of the very finest dining experiences in the world, combining nods to tradition with fierce modernity, philosophical conceptions with old-fashioned flavour, warmth with daring” and “Food meets art: The kitchen’s creations are heavily influenced by art and music (in particular, jazz)”.
The winning announcement followed the unveiling of the full top 50 list, in addition to a number of special awards, at a star-studded ceremony in Bilbao in Northern Spain. El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, which won in 2013 and 2015 and which we visited last year came second (review coming soon!).
