The_Melville_Outside

From the outside it looks like an old pub; inside it looks like an 80’s wine bar, so a slightly strange mix of  wine bar, restaurant and real-ale pub with black ash tables and period lighting outside.  A good range of beer on tap with Deuchars, Landlord, Cobra, Singha, Erdinger, Tennents, Golden Draught and Carling. Plenty of wine and spirits too.

The menu

The_Melville_Soup

Sweet potato and coconut soup £3.95

A good amount of soup but a little too peppery and not much taste of coconut either.  Good sweet potato taste though ( under the pepper!)

The_Melville_Scotch_EggThe Melville Scotch Egg – £4.95

Really spicy haggis and egg filling with  baby gherkins and served on salad. Soft on the inside but crunchy on the outside. A bit unusual but pretty tasty!

The_Melville_Platter

All day platter, any 3 for £9.95

The menu has a number of little dishes which you can have as starters or you can pick any 3 for your main course, here we’ve went for the Melville Burger (juicy!), Fish and Chips (lovely batter!) and Ham Hough Terrine (very meaty!). Although each dish in itself might be wee the combination of all 3 was pretty big and as such we couldn’t finish it all but it was all very tasty.

The_Melville_Nachos Nachos £6.95

With fresh salsa, good guacamole, a large amount of Jalapenos and the sour cream tasted very much like Smetana (Eastern European sour cream). Another huge portion that we struggled to finish!
For the really hungry additional Haggis or Cajun Chicken can be added for £1.00 each.

The_Melville_Dessert

Pear William £4.95

Poached pear, Pistachio cake and salted caramel ice-cream. We could only manage a single dessert between the 2 of us and this was gorgeous. Absolutely lovely pear, cake and ice-cream. A great combo to finish on!

Overall, great value for money for the huge portion sizes with plenty of choice and a few novelties on the menu. Good location too, what with Bert’s Bar next door and Teuchters across the road. A real ale pub crawl could easily start or finish here! Clean toilets, with  lovely sea kelp soap and instant hot water and interesting artwork on the way back up! Would be a good place to meet friends after a day’s shift if you work nearby or to stop off for lunch when out shopping.  Popular with both women and men.
