Continuing the trend of American-inspired eateries in Glasgow following Buddy’s, Roast, The Squid & Whale etc a new cafe has opened in Strathbungo with its emphasis firmly on dessert, specifically New York-style cheesecakes. We love a good cheesecake so were eager to check out Lovestruck Cafe.
We had a Fentimans rose lemonade (£1.50) and a white coffee (£2) but the coffee cup was a bit grubby having a stain from the previous customer!
Local roasters ‘Dear Green Coffee’ is the brand of choice, which is usually great but sadly this coffee was really watery.
Toasted ploughman’s sandwich. £4.95
Nice bread and slightly toasted which was a pleasant surprise, really nice strong cheddar (a good chunk too!) with pickle and a fresh salad (lovely red onion and shredded beetroot – but would’ve preferred chunky slices),
But what we’ve all been waiting for…
Only one main? Yes, the cheesecakes were what we really came for and they’re small, rounded and New York-style but all made with Scottish Crowdie cheese, British beet sugar, free range eggs and spelt or oat bases from Lovestruck’s own homemade biscuits, which you can also buy.
Lemon and rosemary £2.75
Tart zesty lemon curd with soft creamy cheesecake and moist biscuit base with some sprigs of rosemary on top. The lemon and rosemary actually worked really well together. Mmm…
Apple and Cinnamon £2.75
A soft creamy cheesecake with a dollop of apple & lavender jam with lavender scattered around the plate. A great pairing of flavours – quite tart again but with sweet jam.
Overall, delicious cheesecakes with unusual flavours on offer – chilli chocolate was also on the menu but if the flavours above are a bit too adventurous then you can settle for a plain original New York cheesecake. And if you don’t like cheesecake then there’s a good selection of other cakes too – plum and coconut, rhubarb slice, American style cobbler with pear and anise all looked pretty good – we shall have to go back and sample these at a later date!
Downsides: the cheesecakes are quite small so you’ll probably want another but that’s probably not a bad thing!
Note: no table-service, it didn’t bother us but we’ve heard a few lazy Glaswegians complaining about it!
