Whisky distilling returns to Glasgow

Mr Foodie took a trip along to see The Clydeside Distillery, the brand new Scotch Whisky Distillery, which has opened in the converted Pumphouse for the Queen’s Dock.

Located between the Riverside Museum and SSE Hydro, The Clydeside Distillery will produce a Lowland single malt using two copper stills crafted by Forsyths of Moray.

The site includes a visitor centre with interactive whisky experience, a well-stocked shop and a café, which anyone can visit –  e.g. you can drop in for just a cuppa and a sandwich without the need to take a tour. Likewise, you can pop in just to buy a bottle of whisky as well.

However, through the tour you can discover the history of Glasgow and whisky in The Clydeside Distillery Dockside Story, then watch the distillers at work.  As they have only recently started making the whisky it will, of course, take a few years before the Clydeside Distillery have matured it and made it available for public consumption, so until then at the end of the tour you can taste a selection of single malt whiskies from across Scotland. The overall experience is different from other distilleries in that there’s an emphasis on the history of whisky-making in the Clyde / Glasgow area (which we knew very little about) so this is certainly something you won’t learn about on other whisky tours and a good excuse to visit!

A tour lasts around 80 minutes and costs £15 per adult (£13 for concessions). Children aged 8 – 17 are also allowed on the tour and they can take part for £5 each (minus the whisky tasting at the end!). Family tickets are available for £33. you can also arrange group tours or longer bespoke tours if you get in touch with the Clydeside Distillery.
