Enjoy some of Glasgow’s top restaurants from the comfort of your home

One of the few plus points from Covid-19 it the rise in the flexibility of restaurants. There may be less tables to sit at but now you can enjoy restaurant-quality dining at home!

Itison have partnered with some of Glasgow’s top chefs to provide exclusive menus that are available for delivery or collection.  Itison asked us to check out the Red Onion Date Night package, so here we go!

Menu

Red Onion are well-regarded for catering to dietary requirements so also available were vegan and vegetarian menus.  We love the way that Red Onion cook classic, comforting dishes but with some pzazz, so looked forward to our four courses, which were:

  1. Crispy confit duck bonbons with plum dipping sauce
  2. Smoked salmon mousse tart with pomegranate salad and lemon dressing
  3. Chateaubriand with truffle Manchego chunky chips, garlic mushrooms, creamed spinach and creamy pepper sauce
  4. Vanilla cheesecake with salted caramel

The food arrived chilled and all suitably labelled. Alongside was a sheet with full cooking instructions. Simples, as money-saving meerkats would say. Check out the food and Mr Foodie’s clutter below (tsk tsk!).

Food

Fred was right up onto the dining table for a sniff which can only be a good thing as he is right fussy.

Snackable thick-filled crispy balls with a Chinese five-spice scented plum dipping sauce. Mr Foodie is a big confit and Beijing duck fan so these went down a treat, making for a pleasant change to haggis balls.

Course 2 was also cat scanned – the salmon certainly appealed to Fred, and us!  Delicate pastry shells filled with salmon mousse and topped with smoked salmon and the unusual addition of pomegranate seeds. Light and summery picnic food.

Looks lush, doesn’t it?

After being twice shooed away from the table Fred reappeared (Don’t mind me, just sneaking past…). We made sure to cook it on the raw-side so that Fred could join in on our date night. A big bit of tasty steak, moreish truffle chips and large garlicky mushrooms. Fred said he doesn’t think the spinach is required though as it didn’t really bring anything to the plate.

And last but not least, pudding: Vanilla cheesecake with salted caramel

Creamy and sweet so happily devoured but a bit on the small side for greedy gannets like us – Fred also enjoyed licking the cream on this one!

Verdict

A stunning date night. Lots of food, which maybe isn’t the best for a date night 😉.  Delivered on time and well-packaged. Each course was easy to assemble and didn’t need too much work so there was still time to relax and enjoy the evening.  The beef was cooked just as we wanted it, obviously, cook it for longer if pink meat scares you!
