Go Greek this Christmas at Yiamas

Yiamas in Bath Street are well-known for their filling gyros (pronounced like yee-ros), however this Christmas Glasgow foodies are in for a treat with this Greek take on Christmas dinner!   Yiamas invited ourselves along to show off their festive offerings.  We shared the plates as even us professional eaters struggled to finish a full Greek dinner!

Christmas lunch and dinner menu

Christmas menu priced at £18.92 for 2 courses, £24.95 for 3 courses

We got to sample all 3 starters, all 3 mains and 1 dessert. Starting off with something non-festive but Greek at least, a bottle each of Loux, which is a sparkling orange and lemon soft drink, the Greek alternative to Fanta.  There will also be some special Greek wine on offer from 1st December.Yiamas Greek Christmas Menu lunch dinner Glasgow

The Starters

Avgolemono soup – egg and lemon with chicken and rice

A Greek cure for the cold and a much needed winter warmth in this weather.  A creamy and refreshing (mildly sour) soup – I never thought I’d consider a hot soup refreshing!   Comforting with lots of flavour, and lovely bread too.

Pastourma beef – beef spiced sausage

A really meaty spicy sausage. If you’ve had good Romanian mici (mititei), sausage-shaped meatballs, it’s a bit like that only spicier like salami.

Christmas tyropitakia – feta and cranberry filo parcels.

We’ve all had brie and cranberry together but what about feta and cranberry? A much better combination IMHO! We’re big fans of filo pastry and these were creamy feta and sweet cranberry filled parcels.  The sesame seeds add an extra nutty flavour to the combo.  I would have been quite happy with three courses of these!

The main courses

Lamb giouvetsi- slow cooked lamb in a tomato sauce with orzo

Proper winter food. Slow-cooked lamb which fell apart nicely, coated in a rich tomato and vegetable sauce with orzo pasta.  A sprinkling of Parmesan brought this to another level.

Turkey souvlaki and trimmings

And now…turkey grilled on skewers (we actually thought it was fish when it came out!)  We aren’t huge turkey fans at Christmas, or any other time of year really, as it is often dry and lacking in flavour but this was tender and still retained some moisture.  The skewer-cooked marinated meat is a winner here and plenty of cranberry sauce was provided too.

But the real highlight for us was actually the trimmings – absolutely perfect roast potatoes, parsnips and carrots cooked with garlic and rosemary.

Fasolakia giaxni – green bean stew

Again more comfort food with green beans, tomato sauce and potatoes.  We don’t think we’ve eaten a bad potato in a Greek restaurant yet! Perfectly cooked veggies that were not overpowered by the sauce.

Walnut and cognac cake with vanilla ice cream

Going for a Greek variant on the Christmas pudding we have a nutty boozy pudding. If you are a walnut fan, or enjoy clootie dumpling, then this is for you. Chunks of walnut throughout this spongy cake with just the right amount of cognac for taste but not make you drunk after a couple of slices!

So much delicious food, even though we shared each plates we were still full! Shout outs for the feta and cranberry parcels as well as the turkey souvlaki.  This is in with a shout for the official Foodie Explorers’ Christmas Night Out!

They have delicious foods. I would chose the fasolakia with stew. It looks tasty.
