Gluten Free doesn’t mean missing out on taste at Carluccio’s

With the rise of gluten-free eating, be it for health or diet reasons, restaurants are having to get their act together and sort out some tasty morsels.  No more afterthoughts here, gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian diners want to have tasty food.  So we went along to Carluccio’s at Silverburn to have some lunch and a beer and all gluten-free.

Decor

Carluccios have a relaxed atmosphere with a very modern and clean venue.  Hints of the Med surround with bowls of fruit and vegetables, as well as the fully stocked shop next door.

Menu

We settled down and checked out the gluten-free menu.  Lots of pasta – but would it taste rubbery?  Bet you never thought you’d see garlic bread or even a chocolate sponge listed.  All gluten-free.

The Food

We started off with some oil and balsamic with some gluten-free bread.  Lightly toasted bread gave a sweet taste and offset the strong olive oil. No need to miss out on nibbles here.

A chilled bottle of gluten-free Peroni to help wash down the pasta.  Surprisingly light and dare I say, tastier than the usual Peroni.  A good lager for a summer day, or football, or well its a good all round lager!

The Don ordered Luganica Pasta, which is Luganica sausage a spicy Italian sausage – not too spicy and coated in a deliciously thick tomato sauce.  I’ll be back for this one.  Served with a side of plump courgettes.  I off course pinched a few of these.  The Don normally orders the non-gluten-free Luganica Pasta and found this version to taste the same.

I went for the Lobster pasta which also included crab, crayfish, tomato, basil and chili.  Watch out for the chili, they sneaked up on me.  Another tasty dish, fresh ingredients and very moreish.

A side of garlic bread, no need to miss out on all the treats here.  Gluten-free bread covered with garlic.  Some more garlic for me would have been perfect, but I love garlic and probably a full bulb on there wouldn’t keep me happy!

Dessert

Affogato with some Frangelico – a delicious hazelnut liqueur. There really aren’t the words for ice cream and booze is there?

I tried the warm chocolate pudding made with almonds and Kahlua.  A very moist chocolate sponge.  No way to tell that this was gluten-free, except that gluten-free cakes are generally very moist and this was.  Moist sponge, melting ice cream and again, I couldn’t tell you if this was a “special” dessert.  It was delish.

As well as the sit in menu, you can get gluten-free goodies to take away in the shop – pasta and cakes caught our eye.
