Recommended for lunch in Delft

A short tram ride from The Hague is the gorgeous city of Delft.  Well known for pottery, canals and Vermeer, it did initially sound like a “pensioner day out” destination when Mr Foodie suggested it.  However, I’m now sweet on Delft and partly because of the Delft coffee houses or Koffy Huizen.

Mr Foodie picked Stads Koffyhuis as a post-tram journey brunch stop as their toilets were meant to be worth a visit.  Well, you know us and our toilet fixation (don’t start me on Japanese toilets!).

Stads was full, it’s popular, on the tourist trail and rightly so. With a canal-side location and friendly staff giving it extra tourist points, a couple of English menus were headed our way so back in the pocket went our Dutch phrasebook and dictionary.

Drinks

We started off with a Satanic Coffee – coffee, chocolate, whipped cream and ginger syrup for Mr Foodie and a Delft leaning cup for myself.  This was coffee, hot chocolate, milk foam and cinnamon served in a leaning cup (look out the window to your left for the leaning church!).

Both were tasty and brought much-needed warmth on this cold day.  There was local beer too so Mr Foodie had to order a bottle of Stads-Koffyhuis Jubileum 50 Jaar IPA. With a dark red/brown colour this had a sweet caramel aroma and bitter grapefruit taste – a bit too bitter but still drinkable for 7%!

Food

I had read about Dutch pea soup (Erwtensoep) so ordered a wee bowl to try it. Served with a roll filled with ham and mustard. Mr Foodie regretted not ordering a bowl himself.

A comfortingly thick, stick to your ribs soup.  With pieces of ham throughout and topped with smoked sausage. Delicious.  This version had a slight curried hint to it.

Mr Foodie ordered an Alex’s Choice roll with beef, tangerine slices and chimichurri. A bit of an odd combo we thought but then you often get lemon or lime with carpaccio and it was tasty meat!

Being in the home of pancakes it would have been rude to not order one.  We picked a savoury pancake with bacon, cheese and leek.

Which was extremely satisfying with just the right amount of each ingredient.  We had a fight on our hands as to who would get to finish this!

Toilets

We can’t forget the toilets! Not journey-worthy but a nice Delft touch with broken Delftware used to decorate the ladies’ mirror. We are happy to report the toilets were clean and tidy with hot water.

We really liked Stads, the staff were friendly and helpful, the food tasty and the atmosphere relaxed. You can purchase items such as syrups, coffee, beer and leaning cups for taking home. It’s maybe a wee bit dear for a cafe though the quality is high!
