Food Review: Shiso Burger, 29C August Str, Mitte, Berlin 10119

Take a leaf out of Shiso’s book…

Shiso Burger on Auguststrasse in Mitte had been recommended to us so we headed there specifically. Inside it was full but we were able to grab the last seats outside – it was a sunny afternoon thankfully.

A couple of mocktails were ordered up as we had enough drinking lined up elsewhere (we had a guide to Berlin pubs with us!)

mocktails – these two cost an extra €1.70 in addition to the €3 meal deal price

Both drinks were probably what we needed to keep hydrated.

Between 12 noon and 5pm they do a “Mittagsmenu” meal deal, which is burger, fries and a drink for the cost of a burger plus an extra €3. If you want you can have the mocktails we had above, which is a bit more exciting than a cola. One cost and extra €1, the other an extra 70 cents.

Here’s the menu…

Food is served in bamboo steamers (sadly no dim sum were hiding in amongst our food!). I have a particular fondness for spiral or twisted potatoes and Germany is the only country where I’ve really seen these on menus so made sure to order them instead of fries. They were nicely seasoned and I could’ve eaten another couple to line my stomach for our Berlin pub crawl…

twisted potatoes – usually €2.60 but included as part of meal deal

All burgers are served medium, which may be a worry to some, especially as the burger I plumped for was the Shiso burger itself.

Inside was tuna, shiso leaf, chilli mayo, teriyaki sauce, lettuce and red onion.  It was pretty tasty and a bit different.

The Mrs. went for a boring cheeseburger and fries combo. She enjoyed the burger with its stacked ingredients and side of well-cooked crunchy fries.

Coleslaw €2.50 and Kimchi €3

We also ordered a couple of sides too: Kimchi and coleslaw. Question. How do you make coleslaw Asian? Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top of course!

Total cost: €25.10 and both our bellies were full.

Overall, we enjoyed our trip to Shiso, they’re doing something a bit novel with burgers with their Asian slant on things, but if we were to criticise anything, the sides (above) were small!

Opening Hours: Mon – Sun : 12-11:30pm. No credit cards. The nearest metro is U Rosenthaler Platz (Berlin) on the U8.
