Food Review: Crannog, Town Pier, Fort William, PH33 6DB

Every time we drive by Fort William we say “must try there” but we are always either running late to pitch a tent before nightfall or coming back and a little, erm, whiffy!  This time Mrs Foodie made it (I’ll make her take me don’t worry!  Mr Foodie).

Crannog Seafood Restaurant is on the main road into Fort William and on the Loch-side, so an ideal site for some views.

Unfortunately it was dark when Mrs Foodie went so no good views, just good food – oh well! 😉

Looking cosy from the outside

Inside the restaurant has a relaxed decor and atmosphere, with interesting artwork.

Menu

I liked the petite nature of the menu, keeping it restricted to what they are good at.  However, with the addition of the specials board it still took a good while to decide on what to have, and even more so when out “competing” with some fellow foodies! 😉

Pan fried Islay Scallops with pickled vegetables and celeriac remoulade £9.95

5 buttery, smooth scallops served with a slightly tangy selection of pickled vegetables and celeriac. The vegetables cut through the frying butter and livened up what can be a plain meaty shellfish.

West coast mussels steamed with white wine, cream and garlic £8.75

Plump and full of cooking liquor – Mrs Baker loved these. We all commented on their size and colour.

Baked Hake filled on black pudding, Savoy cabbage and served with a fondant potato £18.20

Look at the size of this?  A huge chunk of meaty Hake.  Mrs Baker gave it a well deserved thumbs up.

Herb coated Coley fillet on a smoked haddock and pea risotto £17.20

Mrs Cook was very quiet whilst eating this, much mmm’s were heard.

Baked Cod filled with spring mash, asparagus and hollandaise. £18.60

I had the pleasure of smooth mash with a soft spring onions, buttery hollandaise and chunky, meaty cod.  The asparagus was crisp and tender.  Beautiful.

Date pudding with butterscotch sauce and cinnamon ice cream £6.95

This gooey sticky toffee pudding-esque matched well with the wintery tasting ice cream.

Lemon tart with vanilla ice cream £7.20

A very tart tart!  Much needed palate cleansing lemon here with cool vanilla ice cream.

The service was friendly and professional with items explained easily and questions answered.  The Crannog is an ideal place for family meals as well as for a special occasion. It’s one of those restaurants that would fit into being a regular haunt.
