Food Review : Browns, 1 George Square, Glasgow

Browns restaurant george square Glasgow

We were invited along to Browns to check them out, and with the added challenge of being nominated for #Meatfreemonday we were eager to see how easy they could cover this (we did order seafood/fish though)

We started with some eau de Loch Katrine table water and a bottle of Rothschild Viognier at £21.20.  A crisp white wine which was an easy match to our food.

In addition we had a selection of bread served with anchovy butter, black olive tapenade and aubergine caviar!  The tapenade and anchovy butter were both delicious and stood out.

Crab Avocado Stack

Strong crab taste rather than being drowned out by mayonnaise.   Personally we would’ve liked more coriander and chilli or something else aromatic as it felt it needed something else.

Feuilletté of Mushroom

Really creamy, light veggie starter.  Cep dusted puff pastry covered mushrooms cooked in a creamy onion and Madeira sauce.   Big meaty mushrooms and plenty of them, a combination of different textures and lovely flavours made this an excellent vegetarian starter.

Roast fillet of Cod

Thick chunky cod. Well seasoned, served with perfect potatoes.  The brown shrimp, capers and parsley butter gave the cod a bit of a decadent feel.

Ricotta, Beetroot and Truffle Tortillini

Very colourful looking dish with red cherry tomatoes, green beans and a light filled pasta with a pleasantly strong truffle taste, and beetroot, which you don’t get too often with pasta!
Served with red amaranth cress for added prettiness. Surprisingly filling.

Eton Mess

An Eton mess stack with cherries, hazelnuts & clotted cream. Nicely presented and very creamy – thumbs up!

Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding

The bread & butter pudding certainly wouldn’t win any awards for looks but it tasted much much better – a good cinnamon taste on sweet brioche bread.

Overall great service, solid quality food. Everything on the menu was available and there were a few specials on offer. Yes, it’s a chain but the food is tasty and the ambiance was enjoyable. The restaurant was busy but we could still hear ourselves talk. The #meatfreemonday challenge wasn’t as hard as expected either – lots to choose from on the menu! Toilets very smart and clean but a bit of a walk to get to as they’re downstairs.
