Food review: Plaistow Cafe, 163 Plaistow Road, Plaistow, London

Plaistow cafe London

Eat like an Eastender

It’s not all fancy food here at Foodie Towers, we like to find a good local cafe on our travels and here is one.

Thanks to AirBnB and the rise of rented home accommodation we were staying in a house in Plaistow (pronounced Plas-toe) for the simple reason that we could get 4 night’s accommodation for the price of 1 night in the city centre. Ian Dury fans should be familiar with the song “Plaistow Patricia” but until we planned this trip we had no knowledge of Plaistow, which we now know is 10 miles east and 30 – 40 minutes by public transport from the centre of London. Plaistow tube station is on the District (green) and Hammersmith & City (purple) lines.

The Plaistow cafe looks like it wouldn’t be out-of-place in Eastenders (well, it is in the east end of London!) and once you get inside, it sounds like it as well with locals popping in to catch up with gossip over a cuppa.

A range of breakfasts are on offer plus burgers, sandwiches and baked potatoes.  As it was a Sunday when we visited, a special of roast lamb, roast potatoes and vegetables was on special for £5.20.

Food

Mr Foodie picked the East Ender breakfast (obviously!). As you can see you get fried egg, bacon, sausage, beans and bubble & squeak with toast (or buttered bread) and tea or coffee.

The bubble was overcooked and the cabbage had a strong flavour so erm, flatulence warning!

The bacon was burnt too but still tasty with beans, egg and sausage, buttery toast and a mug of builders tea.

I had sausage, egg, chips and beans with a side of bread and butter and a mug of tea.  Perfect fried egg for chip or bread and butter dipping.  It was a big portion as well so I struggled with it.

Plaistow cafe London

It’s not haute cuisine, it’s a greasy spoon breakfast but it did the job.  A good portion, strong tea and quick, friendly service.
