Food review: Behind the Wall, Falkirk

Behind the Wall, Above the Grade

We needed a night away from Glasgow and Behind the Wall bar & grill in Falkirk was picked for a change of scenery.  Helped by the fact that it has good reputation for Tex-Mex food and is just across the road from Falkirk Grahamston railway station (it’s handy for buses too)!

It’s an impressive tardis of a pub with a variety of rooms inside with a club/cocktail bar, a family dining area, a conservatory and a real ale bar with venue upstairs and a beer garden outside so a space to suit everyone’s tastes!   The drinks selection reflects this with an extensive cocktail menu, everyday lagers and a list of craft beer, as well as a large coffee menu for those not partaking in alcoholic beverages.

Check out their Drinks Menu here.

So this actually is what’s…behind the wall! It’s a good mix of styles, the bar where’s you enter manages to look both historic (above) and modern (below).

Food

We were warned about the portion sizes but thought we’d still give three courses a go…

Here’s our choice of starters – tortilla soup (!), a small portion of nachos with cheese dip and southern fried halloumi with chimichurri sauce.

Nachos con queso £2.95

Crisp and fresh nachos served with gloopy cheesy sauce.  Enough for two to share!

Southern fried halloumi with chimichurri mayo £5.95

Crispy southern fried coated squeaky halloumi with a spicy sauce served with a few nachos too.  Not a hint of oil and the coating was herby and moreish.

Tortilla Soup £3.50 – a thick, spiced tomato soup topped with nachos and jalapeños served with mini corn and jalapeño muffins. A good soup and a big portion, not so sure about the dry wee muffins on the skewer though!

Then the massive main courses arrived – would we be able to eat it all?

The Big Crunchie £13.50. A beef burger with mayo, lettuce and tomato in a pretzel bun topped with nachos, tomato salsa, ranch beans, Monterey Jack cheese, guacamole and sour cream.   Served with a battered onion ring, slaw and fries.  I loved these fries – fluffy, crisp and perfect for dipping into mayo or slaw.  The pretzel bun held up to the challenge of the burger and toppings.  A meaty burger which was juicy and HUGE.  The beans and nachos added an interesting texture.  Thumbs up from Mrs Foodie.

Between the sheets – Tex Mex Steak £12.95. These flour tortillas are sandwiched with Pepper Jack cream cheese and roasted red pepper and served with a portion of fries on the side.  Mr C picked this one and thumbs up from him too. Plenty of steak and creamy cheese with a side of delicious fries.  A healthy portion, so much in fact that a doggy bag had to be asked for!

Mac and cheese topped with mango chicken £12:50. Here’s an unusual combo, who would have thought that mango chicken complimented macaroni cheese?! The macaroni was really moreish and there was a plentiful amount of chicken but the main taste was actually salt, and it was just a little too salty. Every now and then you got a taste of fruity mango which was a surprisingly pleasant mix. The portion was so large that Mr Foodie could only manage half and so another doggy bag was requested!

We failed our task of eating 3 courses at Behind the Wall. They had defeated us so no pudding was ordered…there’s always next time!

Staff were approachable, helpful and friendly. Toilets were clean and tidy. So all in all a great visit. Mr Foodie had his macaroni leftovers for lunch the next day and still struggled to finish it!

If you fancy paying a visit to Behind The Wall then they will be hosting a beer festival this weekend. For more info see our post here.

TL;DR
+ Massive portions
+ Good beer selection
+ Tasty grub
+ Different rooms with mix of styles
+ Easy to get there by public transport

– Portions so huge that we had no space for dessert!
