Learn about (and drink) wine at Eiskeller in Düsseldorf

First stop on our foodie tour of Düsseldorf was Eiskeller (“Ice cellar”) which was voted “Best Classic Wine Bar in Germany” in 2017 by Falstaff.  The cosy wine bar has around 250 different types of wine, mostly German but many from around the world as well.

Run by Dorina Sill and Klaus Wahlen, it was Dorina herself, who guided us through a selection of wines, which of course included a few Rieslings with my fave wine on the day being the Dr. Hermann 2017 Riesling from Mosel.
I’m now trying to track down a bottle in Glasgow or perhaps I should just go back to Eiskeller? 😉

The former ice cellar, where the name comes from, at the rear of the building provides a cool place (both literally and figuratively!) to hang out with friends and sample new wines.

Here, we found out about the different growing areas, styles and variety of German wine, which is way more varied than just Mosel Riesling, Blue Nun and Black Tower!

Since it was such a sunny day and us “weegies” wanted a tan, we ended our visit with some fizz in the wine garden (the pedestrianised street out front).  I could think of worse ways to pass the day!

Here are the 8 wines we tasted, each one getting a thumbs up from us both. 👍
Reichsrat von Buhl – Riesling Brut 2015
Martin Tesch – Unplugged Riesling 2015
Dr. Hermann – Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett 2017
Cellier des Chartreux – La Nuit Tous les Chats Sont Gris 2017
Pittnauer – Dogma St.Laurent 2015
Joern – Riesling Basis Brocken 2016
The Juice Asylum – Il Terzo Grado 2016
Pojer e Sandri – Zero Infinito 2015

Eiskeller is located near to the Art Academy so attracts a lot of local artists. Look out for the postcards with art at the entrance!
