Ways to eat currywurst

You can ask for your Currywurst with a sausage with skin on it (“Currywurst mit Darm”) or without skin (“Currywurst ohne Darm” or “darmlos.”).

Once cooked the sausage is added to a paper tray and sauce is added and topped with a sprinkling of curry powder. However this depends on where you buy your currywurst. Some stands have the sauce already flavoured with curry, or plain sauce and curry powder. Fries (pommes ) Mayo and a roll (brotchen) are common accompaniments.

The history behind currywurst

It is said that the snack was first created on 1949 by German woman Herta Heuwer. Allied soldiers brought with them foods such as ketchup, Worcester sauce and curry powder. Herta was inspired to create a sauce that would go alongside the local pork sausage and make the famous currywurst dish.

Her recipe for currywurst sauce is unknown however it spawned a whole shedload of imbiss – food stands – throughout the city to make the dish.
